Subject: Need Help Replacing a Sliding Window Pane
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-2"

Hello Listees: I need to replace a broken window on the sliding door of an '85 Vanagon. It is the sliding window that is broken, not the fixed one. I have an entire window assembly, but I assume it is easier to replace the individual pane, as opposed to the whole thing (I have replaced a rear quarter window before, but I don't have a helper this time, and Hurricane Rita promises a lot of rain this weekend). In the past, I have removed this window pane by using one or two scissor jacks to vertically spread apart the window frame enough to remove the glass, but I ended up permanently bending the frame (this is with the window frame assembly installed in the door). I think I removed the plastic channel guides on the lower window channel, but it was still a very close fit. I would prefer not to damage the window frame this time. What is the best way to replace this sliding window pane? Do I have to remove the entire window frame from the van? As always, thanks in advance!

Cary
