I don't even know what a VW 1301 is and I do not have my Bentley, but the temperature gauge is a 250 ºF, standard ground VDO item so substitute a 100 ohm resistor for the temperature sender. If the gauge is kosher, the needle will swing just about to the right edge of the LED.
