Chris,

Sounds like an antenna problem, although if you get good/normal FM reception then we're missing something. FM reception uses the same antenna. The fact that you have had the same poor AM results with 3 radios still points at the antenna, and not a radio fault. At least check the connection in back and at the base of the antenna before buying another. Or borrow an antenna and plug it in temporarily without mounting it.

Your clock radio should have an internal antenna; it's likely a ferrite rod type mounted just inside the case. If you rotate the radio, you'll probably find it's pretty directional; that's characteristic. But, as far as I know, auto radios have never used internal antennas.
