There are various postings around of these things and the ones for cell
phones.  The comments range from "works but not as advertised" to "junk".

That 1 mile is really stretching it.  Perfectly flat terrain with both send
and receive outside in sight of each other with no electrical interference
anywhere in the air.  However I am told that the better ones do have a very
realistic half mile range.  I just havent been able to justify the price tag
of the better units.  I just park closer to the starbucks.
