Ned, give the engine a good going over and find and fix any vacuum leaks. That will most likely take care of the problem. One culprit that is often overlooked is the hose from the crankcase vent tower on top of the engine over to the AFM. It tends to rot out on the underside and develops holes there. Once any vacuum leaks are taken care of, warm the eninge, disconnect the idle stabilizer valkve, and adjust the mixture(that really big screw with the big slot for a common screwdriver) so that the rpm is 850/900 RPM. Then shut down, allow the engine to cool, reconnect the idle stablizer valve, and start the engine, It should idle around 1200 until it warms up, then drop back to 850/900. It will probably hunt up and down abit between 850 and 900 rpm.

If all that doesn't do it for you, let us all know. Maybe someone else has some more insights.

Good Luck,

Regards,

John Rodgers 88 GL Driver

>I am having problem with my 1987 Vanagon. We had searched the archives for fixes on the Syndrome but still having erratic problems. Van will idle fine when first fired up then the rpm's will drop and raise and then finally cut off. Also when driving the van it will "buck" loose power and until you mash the gas to the floor it will continue to operate poorly. We purchased the very expensive harness jumper from VW hoping that it would fix the problem . After installing we are still having the same issues and the RPM's tend to hunt up and down even more. Any help would be greatly appreciated. > > > >__________________________________________________ >Do You Yahoo!? >Tired of spam? Yahoo!
