It may be worth a shot... I toasted my pump by running it dry, and rebuilt it with the BD kit... two years later, it's still a-pumpin. Basically, if the metal parts aren't chipped, cracked or damaged, the new seals in the BD kit should get you going... if the metal is destroyed, then it's new pump time. In my case, the funky-shaped seal was busted up, and there was one tiny chip in the metal next to the groove it fits in, so I gave the rebuild a shot.

That worked for me... but I did get a good used spare, and I keep it handy. :-)
