I have to add to this.
Rarely is there a single cause to a happening. More than likely it is a
combination of things, or a cascading failures.

I spoke to a friend of mine who is an automotive journalist about this
subject, and why so many SUVs are shipped with P-metric (e.g. passenger
car) tires.

His comment was that consumer demand for a "smooth" ride in SUVs pushed
the manufacturers to forgo LT tires for P-metric tires. Along with the
comment that anyone who was serious about off-roading would swap out
the tires. However, being that something like 80-90 percent of SUV
owners never even engage 4WD, the manufacturers felt safe in using
pmetric tires - figuring that most people would just be on the freeway.

I would also add that the Bronco Firestone problem is strangely similar
to the Firestone 500 tire problem that occurred in the 1970's.
So one could make the case that part of the problem was a manufacturing
process that was endemic to Firestone.

I don't believe it was one party's fault. It was the combination of
many factors.
I wasn't the tire's hat were at fault at all.
If you remember the "fracas" at all, it was the owner's of the Bronco's
following the manufactures recommended tire pressure listed in the door
jam.
Which by the way was all wrong for the tire.
This is why they had problems.
Don't believe everything you read, and in my opinion only follow the
tire mfg's recommended pressure's.
They know what's up.
They built the tire.
Ford didn't.
And VW sure didn't either.
