Most batteries are designed to be "nonspill" . The little vent ports and tubes on them are designed in a way that the will rarely leak very much. We have gotten shipments of batteries in where one has gotten tipped and only a very small amount had to be neutralized and wiped up. If you are really worried about spills in a crash buy AGM batteries like those made by Optima, exide, and a couple others.

Batteries in my van. The start battery is covered in its compartment. The aux battery sticks above but is strapped. My other two aux batteries are in battery boxes and strapped down solidly (not just screwed to the wood flooring) My tool box is fastened down as well as extinguisher and almost everything else when I hit the highway. I have both seen and experienced the results of stuff not being fastened down correctly when I have had to slam on the brakes or been hit in an accident.

A very awaking one that I stopped to help on had a windshield punched out in a way that looked like a head had impacted it in the center. It was caused by a decoration that had sat on the back window ledge when it flew to the front from the force of the impact. That could have been the back of the drivers or a passengers head getting whacked by it. jimt
