Maybe try adjusting your timing. Just loosen the distributor nut and turn
it a hair.Remember where it was when you began.Vanagon syndrome is
notorious for having parts thrown at it till a cure is found.Suspect the
afm after you do other stuff, as it is expensive.Nothing worse than
spending all this money , and finding out that you dont even need it(bad
vanagon!). You can solder a tantallem capacitor to the afm.Try typing
tantallem into the archives(or even sjpelling it). Maybe try the afm ground
wire approach. An 02 sensor is probably needed anyway(mileage,$20 at
advance auto parts+ installation($10)).A good strong fuel injector cleaner
may help. Check real well for a loose vacuum hose or connection. You can
use a propane torch(DONT LIGHT IT!!!!!!!!!!!). Just turn it on and use the
gas to find any hole in the hoses.Start the engine of course.When a hole is
found, the gas will be sucked into the hose and burned. The rpm will rise
till the gas is burned.Be careful and vent the engine compartment every few
minutes.Disconnect the ecu and all the other components and then reattach
them.A burnt or broken wire can be the problem.Maybe a groundwire just
needs to be cleaned.As you know, this isnt a simple problem to find, and
it requires one to be determined and have a way to relax between attempts
at repairs Infact a listee,this week,has found a damaged wire to be the
answer. This is a good time for a parts vanagon, as you can swap the parts
that are known to be good with the sick vanagon.Borrow a vanagon for this(
fat chance).This is a good time to go to a pick and pull junk yard. Get an
new ecu, hall sender,idle stabilizer,afm,distributor,temp 11 sensor, ect,
ect, ect for less than $100.There are many early vanagons like yours in the
junkyard, or just sitting in someones backyord. Go through this lonely
proceedure, and come out the other side with your wallet intact(and sanity)
and you have arrived as a vanagon owner.
