Jim,

I don't know what year/engine you have, but on my '85 1.9, this happens often. In my fiddling with it, I've found that if I reseat the two-pin electrical connection to the small vacuum/electrical thing located in the upper right corner of the forward engine compartment bulkhead, the problem goes away for a while.

I'm not sure just what that part is called (or if the 2.1 has one... I assume other listees can ID the part, and the years it was used) but it does seem to be involved in talking to the ECU until the engine warms up.
