They used an aluminum-plastic-aluminum laminate stuff, like Reynobond. I considered it for a similar cabinet project, but have since all but abandoned it as a possible material. It's lightweight and would be pretty easy to work with, but unfortunately it's primary use seems to be for decorative fascia on buildings, so finding it in quantities smaller than a half-truckload is difficult. Large signmakers also use it, but they generally don't care to sell three uncut sheets at reasonable material prices to some random guy off the street. If anyone knows where to find this stuff in small quantities, I'd love to hear about it!
