Battery acid is very dilute sulfuric. You could swim in it... so long as it didn't get into the various orifices! It could cause problems if it got into eyes in an accident.

Japanese vans have batteries located in a well in the right-front corner of the cargo floor. This is open to the air under the van, and covered by a clip-in metal cover with rubber seal. With age, and having big boots planted on it and heavy items dropped on it, this becomes dented and bent and no loongeer fits tightly.
