RE: So, why do so many Great Danes need rescuing?"
Do an internet search for dog rescue organizations, you will be surprised at how many there are, both organizations and dogs needing homes. Not just Great Danes but every breed you have heard of and many that you have not. My wife used to do Dalmation rescue and training here and they are much more work then Danes.
"Great Dane breeders have not been the most responsible group of people as a whole. Over breeding is an issue with this dog."
This can be said about many breeds.
"She will chew up shoes, clothes, fish food, cats, etc."
This is not a breed specific issue, it is training or rather a lack of it. Adopting a fully grown dog means that you may end up with one that has not been properly trained and may have some issues to deal with. In general Danes are a mellow breed and very loyal to their owners, this is part of why we chose a Dane and would do so again.
