It's a pain if you take the seats in and out much, but I found a way to
attach the back strap without any modifications to the car. I also have
an
'87 Syncro-with the fold down rear seat.
Just for clarity: child seat is the child safety seat, car seat is the
seat that VW installed in your Vanagon.
Set the child seat on your car seat. Before you attach the
seat/shoulder belt, run the back strap (from the child seat) over the
car seat's back and down under. You can attach the clip to the metal of
the car seat's bottom frame. Tighten that strap tight enough to hold
the child seat about 4"
above the car seat's cushion. Kneel in the child seat, pushing it down
to the car seat cushion, and fasten/tighten the shoulder/lap belt. The
back strap will squash down into the cushion on the car seat. This will
put tension on the back strap, keeping it from coming loose from the car
seat frame. I suppose it might come loose if you get hit hard from
behind, but I'd bet not. Of course, my way relies on the latch that
keeps the seatback from folding down-probably not the strongest part of
the car.
