Neal, I don't know about a van, but I've done this in my camper, replacing the tattered original covering with good quality vinyl that looks a lot like the original. I was disappointed with contact cement. After using commercial vinyl wallpaper paste to redo the the ceiling in my parents' camper, I am using the same to redo the interior of my camper piece by piece and I am very happy with the results.
