I've transported dogs the American Brittany Rescue in my van (RVC) and these dogs, even at half the size of a Great Dane, are usually dumped for the same reasons.

A couple years ago, against our better judgment, took in a dog that is at the opposite end of the size spectrum from the Great Dane -- we share the house with a one-eyed Chihuahua. She's not terribly bright being a product of the Universal Kennel Club -- I think their sole goal is to ensure that all dogs sold at flea markets are very closely related. One day while walking with the Chi to the mail box we encountered one of my neighbors and his grand daughter (2-3 yoa) who took one look at Kiwi and exclaimed "It's a pig!" My wife and I still laugh about it on a regular basis.
