Mark,

Sorry, no alternative ring & pinions are available for the Vanagon automatic. Trust me, I've looked high and low, and even talked with a few machine shops about building some (very, very expensive).

Cheers,

So that's 45 mph in 3rd gear on the automatic? If so would a ring/pinion changeout make it do-able? Mark

Mark,

IMO: The TDI and the automatic tranny are not a good fit. The TDI likes to run around 2800 RPM, which is about 45mph using your automatic tranny. We refuse to do the TDI conversion for automatic Vanagons, and seriously push for changing out the ring & pinion or at least 3rd and 4th gear when putting a TDI into a manual transmissioned Vanagon.

Cheers,

Volks, I am considering using a Fast Forward kit and salvage later model TDI engine to drop in my 90 Carat w/automatic. Fast Forward shows on there site a similar conversion; late model Vanagon automatic with 1.9TDI dropped in and the owner has reported 30-32MPG. Anyone on the list done this: wasserboxer 2.1L w/auto to 1.9TDI? If so what are your mpg figures city/hwy? If this conversion gets anything above 25MPG overall w/current gas/diesel prices the conversion pays itself off very rapidly against what I'm seeing mpg-wise with the wasserboxer.
