I replaced the original backing board with "Kelly Board", AKA wind brace board. It's used in between brick and framing as a weather seal, wind brace material. It's about $1.80 a 4x8' sheet and can be cut with a good utility knife. I covered it with very nice fabric wall covering that had a vinyl backing.
