Yeah, I was going to say I had some luck with brown shoe polish on my padded brown dash cover that was faded. A number of coats and the thing looks pretty good. I think the can of polish is probably carrying some dye in it as well--if not mostly dye. I used the Kiwi brand.

If it's black you're dealing with I've even had luck using a permanent ink Sharpie on some surfaces.
