Subject: Breakdown forces 83 Camper Sale in NJ
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
I got a call today from a local shop. They had a tale of woe for me.
Apparently two women came over from England to Toronto, Canada. They
wanted to tour the US for a few months in a VW Vanagon Camper. They
bought an 83 aircooled manual transmission with a recently rebuilt
engine that supposedly is still under warranty. They paid around $5000
US for the van and it is supposed to be in very good condition
body-wise. They made it down from Toronto to Pennsville, NJ (right over
the Delaware Memorial Bridge from PA and Del). But now the engine has
zero compression and backfiring, etc. The women chose to continue with
their trip and left the van at Chip's Automotive Repair. Now they want
to sell the van. Chip told me that they were probably looking for
around $2500 however at this point I think the price is negotiable.
You may be able to contact the engine rebuilder, ship the engine back to
him for repair, and get another rebuilt engine out of this deal (not
sure who the rebuilder is at this point but Chip does have the paperwork
in the van). The down side I can see with this deal is that the van is
a Canadian vehicle that has a Canadian title. The only way you could
get it registered here is if you live in a state that only requires a
bill of sale for older vehicles instead of titles (many states do this
but not NJ). I can't buy it but I thought I would pass this on to the
list to see if anyone else wants to pick it up.
If you need more info please call Chip at 856-678-4066. He said he
could take pictures for folks if you wanted them.
Please don't ask me any more questions about the van as I have never
seen it, and I don't know any more. I can't go look at it for you
unless you want to pay for my time (it is 45 mins away) or you could
have the van towed here and I could do the engine swap for you, etc. I
have no financial interest in this, just trying to help out Chip and
these two women who I have never met.
Thanks,
Ken Wilford
