It is only vehicles in Canada and the USA that do not have ZZZ. My TriStar, a Swedish market vehicle, is for format WV2ZZZ24Z.... is the norm outside of North America. These are supposed to be refered to as ENGINE, RESTRAINT and CHECK DIGITS. Every time I register a European vehicle in Canada the motor vehicles people say the VIN can't posssibly be correct as the check digit is wrong... that's because of the ZZZ thingie.

The really interesting thing is the "hidden VIN" on the North American vehicles here DOES NOT MATCH the VIN on the dash! At the front passenger jack support is the vehicles VIN stamped into the sheet metal. Your dash might read WV2B0H245... but the "hidden VIN" will read WV2ZZZ24Z...

I'm looking at a European van that the owner says has a VIN of: WV2zzz25zng002290 I've never seen or heard of a VIN with ZZZ??

there is no such possiblity of ZZZ on the vanagon.com info sheet at: http://www.vanagon.com/info/vin/

Any ideas? Thanks Malcolm
