You either have air in the brake system or the rear brakes are messed
up. Does the hand brake work? If you pull it does the pedal now feel
normal? If so, the rear brakes are worn or not adjusted or the drums are
oversized, etc. Also, the rear brake cylinders are supposed to have a
spring to push the pistons out against the shoes. Only ATE still has
this spring.

Hi all
i have a 81 westi that the brakes go to the floor the 1st time you hit
the brake pedal. on the 2nd pump it is VERY solid and brakes well and no
pulling. i checked
the bentley on the booster and the one way valve. both checked good so
im not sure if the master cyl is bad.  there is also good pedal with it
not running also. i
do have a 2nd master cylinder from a 85 vanagon. is it the same from the
85 to the 81?? thanks Jonce
