I made the big leap this weekend and bought an '87 Vanagon GL from a guy outside of Cincinnati. Drove it 750+ miles back to Minneapolis without incident...didn't burn even a drop of oil. Even needing plugs/wires/tuneup I got about 15 mpg. Of course, my wife got 48 in her '96 Passat TDI!

I ended up getting one with an auto trans after plenty of input from this group. Thank you all for your advice--I expect I'll need more of it in the coming months and years!
