I've got waaaayy too much experience with this. When you call AAA specify an extended cab tow truck because you have 3 (or 4) people. They understand this perfectly and can usually help. This said i understood this tactic, we had a very helpful tow truck in Georgia who squeezed my wife, myself, our 16 yr old daughter and her best friend into the front seat of his single cab tow truck. About every 5 minutes he'd groan and say "o god, if a cop sees us now i'm dead". He made our dog (Casey) ride in the van behind the tow truck which was no big deal. Frankly, this wasn't Casey's first tow, he just regarded the steep slant of being towed as a big hill and continued to snooze in the back.
