RE: "my question is - would you plan on traveling/camping w/ a 4-month old baby? if so, please explain how you'd do it."

Of course you can travel with a baby, it just takes a little forethought and the willingness to adjust your plans as needed.

On our drive from Berkeley, CA home to Anchorage, approximately 3500 miles via the route we chose our then 8 month old son slept behind the back seat of our Westy and we slept up top until we got to the more northern latitudes and it turned cold at night. The trip was in early August so it was 100F in California when we started but dropped to the high 20's at night in Whitehorse, BC where we spent three nights waiting for a new clutch to arrive and be installed. For this part of the journey he slept in our sleeping bags(two zipped together) along side of me. While on the road plan your meal times around your childs feeding schedule or you may find yourself making one stop to feed the child and another for yourself. We chose to use disposable diapers, but you could use cloth, though you might end up stopping to do laundry more often. Take a variety of baby toys and more clothes and supplies then you think that you will need. One fo the most important safety issues is t he proper installation of your childs safety seat, studies have shown that 80% of child safety seats are installed incorrectly. I believe that many hospitals now have staff trained in carseat installation and will show you how to do this. People certified in carseat installation go through a week long course and have a text book as thick as a medium size phone book, they also have to renew their certification every few years.

Now for a shameless business plug, although it will not directly affect me in your case. Babies, and young children do NOT need a bunch of new clothes, toys, crib, etc, they are quite happy with used and so is your wallet as they will out grow everything long before they can wear it out. If there is a Once-Upon-A-Child store in your area it should be an excellent source for much of what you will need and save you a lot of money. These stores operate on the same principle as Play-it-Again Sports, Plato's Closet, Music-Go-Round, or Computer Renaissance, they buy your used items and resell them to someone else. The shameless plug part of this is that my wife owns the local store.

Congrats on your new child.
