During the Loma Prieta quake in 1989 I was stranded in San Francisco. With nothing better to do, I walked to a friend's house to see if she was safe or even made it home from downtown. Near her home I encountered a Westy in which the owners had set up housekeeping for the evening in front of their house. They even had a TV running. I've always thought that was a cool idea - if that happens at least I can go wait it out in my van. The aftershocks were unnerving, to say the least, so I encountered many residents that night who were simply hanging out outdoors rather than stay inside with everything shaking/falling. I encountered a lady who's home had a huge crack down one wall; my friend's house was a total mess - absolutely everything that could fall over had done so. I got everything to make it whole, except time, money and energy.
