if the housing you speak of is shorter because of the floor vents, i'm
guessing its a Doka only part...?? dunno. >>

 I have the same vent system in my old 1990 non-GL Vanagon. Fortunately, I
still have access to the van for comparison purposes.
 It would appear that the auto trans version used just the flat floor w/o
this raised venting system. My 82 Diesel van has a similar vent but it is
flat front to back instead of angling upwards to the front like this one.
 So far it looks like I have retrofit the earlier vents to go to auto trans.
Either that or cut a hole in the vent to fit the shifter console.
