As I recall the hoses that connect to the steel pipes to the radiator are different for metal versus plastic pipes, so they'd have to be changed too if you switched over.

If you have the earlier Vanagon with metal pipes, I carry German made Stainless Steel replacements. Mine come as two pieces with a coupler hose between them (and a lip on the pipes to hold the coupler in place), so you can install them without removing the gas tank. They are priced lower than the non-stainless VW ones were.
