Make sure the crankcase is not overfilled. There should not be much viscosity difference at normal temps between 5w-30 or 10w-30 but we know better. Both are poor choices for any extended highway speed travel regardless of outside temps. 20w-50 is good down to about 20F. Synthetic 15w-50 gets you below 0F. I've been experimenting with the Mobil 0w-40 synthetic with good results. This should be good to ~-20F or lower.
