I have a gear reduction starter (not from GoWesty) in my SVX conversion. I was told by Kennedy I would need one for an SVX engine. Mine works great, although there have been reports of failures from these units. After I bought it and put it on, Smallcar said they had been using stock Vanagon starters with all their conversions lately (last year) with good results. They said the 87 and up vans had upgraded starters. If they can start a high compression 3.3 liter 6 banger, I think I would try to stay stock. As far as cheap NAPA (or any other stores) rebuilds, I would avoid them. I have had nothing but bad luck with all of the rebuilt stuff I have used. John |
