or is this an indication of trouble elsewhere as well?

I think there is a problem is with turning the wheels to the full lock.

Solution: Don't. ;)

I'm no engineer, but it's something like the pressure increases exponentially when you turn the wheels to full lock. Backing off an inch on the steering usually stops the pumps from being stressed and in turn stops the squeeling.

Again, I'm no engineer and I'm sure there's a theory that the pump should be able to take whatever you give it. But hopefully someone will chime in about the specifics and we'll learn if this is fact or wive's tale.

My grand dad taught me to back off on the power steering a bit when it was pushed all the way to the lock for the pressure reason--even in the best conditions you can hear that thing stress when the wheel is turned to the lock. I never fully understood, but it made some sense.

This weekend on Car Talk they had someone call in with a similar problem and the consensus was that stressing the pump by turning the wheels all the way to lock would lead to trouble.

That's all I know, I realise it's only hlaf information--the most dangerous kind. Best, Jeff 83.5 Westy LA,CA
