Hi Bob
I have 2 vanagons a 84 w/ only 23k on it and a 85 westi with unknown miles on it. when i got it it barely ran. i then got it to run not bad but not right. found
coolant getting into the #2 and 1 and 3 doing a good job with #4 the compression was 0 due to over charge of the lifters. i picked up a 84 running 1.9L
from a friend that did a tiico conversion and installed that motor with a new water pump and all gaskets and seals. it had head work and new rings installed
before i got it. this motor was found that the lifters would overcharge on #1 and #3. finally got all corrected and found that over time when it warmed up that
the oil pressure would drop off. runs fine and sounds fairly good but oil pressure drops off to trigger the light at about1300 rpm. so insteps motor Number X. i
had purchased a 300.00 dollar 85 vanagon that the motor was taken apart. it had that i found a bent crank. i had taken the whole thing to Mini
Performance or Autocraft to have them look it over balance it and check all clearances on the whole shooting match about 1.5 years ago. they
straightened the crank and balanced everything to meet there needs if used for racing that i will not be doing. pistons where also balanced along with
flywheel and pressure plate and front pulley. Rods where balance light and heavy end after bushed and resized. after getting it back i was just to lazy to put
it together so i boxed and crated it and shelved it for another day.
in that time i had gotten the friends motor with low oil pressure to save time and money which is not what i have accomplished with this whole thing. So i will
be building Motor X. i did start to pull apart the motor that came in the vanagon when i purchased it and after getting the pistons off i decided to pull out
motor X. intentions were to just install the new pistons and cylinder and near perfect heads on it that i have laying around and leaving the short block alone.
BTW motor X has only 13k on it before something happened and it was out of warrenty. it was a canadian exchange motor or something of sorts. it is ultra
clean and most of all the parts are basically near new. i have boxes of type 1 parts from all my early vw adventures. and have plenty of Rod bearings for
type 1 in all sizes from std to .75mm so im good till the next question. thanks for the help and i will be asking questions as i can find time to work on engine
X.
thanks Jonce
