Malcolm, the definative answer is that they had two part numbers for the
2.1l Vanagon ECUs between 86-91 (all the years they made the 2.1l
engine). They were 025906022 and 025906022D. They are interchangeable
and the difference is the D is the newer version found in vans after
89. However the changes were so minor that there is no drivability
differences between the two ECUs if you were to swap them into the same
van as long as it is a 2.1l with the digifant injection system (again
86-91). The X at the end indicates a rebuilt unit. If you have an X at
the end of an alternator part number such as AL27X that means it has
been rebuilt by VWs part numbering system. I guess that is all I can
contribute except to note that I have rebuilt 2.1l Vanagon ECUs in stock
for $250 plus a $100 core charge. I don't use the X at the end though
just because I don't feel like it. :-)
