Malcolm, the definative answer is that they had two part numbers for the 2.1l Vanagon ECUs between 86-91 (all the years they made the 2.1l engine). They were 025906022 and 025906022D. They are interchangeable and the difference is the D is the newer version found in vans after 89. However the changes were so minor that there is no drivability differences between the two ECUs if you were to swap them into the same van as long as it is a 2.1l with the digifant injection system (again 86-91). The X at the end indicates a rebuilt unit. If you have an X at the end of an alternator part number such as AL27X that means it has been rebuilt by VWs part numbering system. I guess that is all I can contribute except to note that I have rebuilt 2.1l Vanagon ECUs in stock for $250 plus a $100 core charge. I don't use the X at the end though just because I don't feel like it. :-) Malcolm Stebbins wrote: >I have done my homework and search the vanagon archives AND the yahoo syncro lists for the >differences in ECUs I have found different ones. > > >What is the DEFINITIVE answer to this??
