Dang. I'm looking to buy a westy top. Too bad I'm in Los Angeles. Probably for the best. My wife would flay me alive if she came outside and caught me cutting the roof of the van open with the air grinder...

If I decide to drive to Oregon without the westy top, I will need > something to protect my interior from the elements for the 2500 mile > trip to Oregon. What constitutes "affordable"? My first thought was a few 4x8 sheets of galvanized steel cut to width and overlapped, but even the thin stuff is kinda pricey (60-70 bucks ea). Maybe medium density fiberboard/masonite type stuff with a quick coat of exterior house paint... but fiberboard ain't so cheap either, unless you can scavenge it used from somewhere. Hey, how about some cheap vinyl flooring? Something in a nice checkerboard pattern? Put in a few scrap-wood slats to support it over the hole and stick it down with silicone and a few washered tek screws? It's tough to come up with something sturdy yet disposable... -- John Bange '90 Vanagon - "Geldsauger" "We'd tell a monkey how to peel a banana, if he said he was peeling one in a Vanagon."
