Hmmm. I don't know where I got the notion that this single wire O2 sensor could be substituted for the 3 wire version, but it has been floating around in my head for a long time, just waiting for the time when the single wire unit would need to be installed. I got this single wire Bosch unit from one of our list vendors about 2-3 years ago and it's just been sitting there, awaiting it's time. And now everyone is telling me that I have to stick with the three wire. Bummer! I understood that you could maybe tie two of the wires off and connect the last wire and it would work. But $40 is cheap enough, and for a 60,000 mile O2 sensor life that is like $0.0006666/mile. Like I said.....Cheap enough.

Ok, it makes sense so a three wire gets ordered Thursday.

But what about the brand new single wire unit that I now can't properly use??

Well, I;m going to stick it into the exhaust port in a gas fired kiln, connect it to a digital multimeter, and monitor the voltage. I will manually open and close a damper to control oxygen flow into the kiln. Plus voltage says the kiln environment is oxidation, Negative voltage says the the kiln environment is reduction. Reduction environments (not enough oxygen) force the fire to gets it's oxygen from the glazes on the pots, turning the copper oxide glazes a wonderful red instead of the copper green that occurs when there is plenty of oxygen. It will be an interesting experiment.

Thanks, All.
