Most of the time if you have a fuel smell after you fill up with gas, or
if you have a leak on the ground after filling up, then one of the
plastic "T"s this plastic pipe is broken (about 80% of the time).  Most
folks who are doing this job don't want to do it again any time soon so
they replace the plastic pipe even if it might not need it at the time
because they realize that it only takes a couple of minutes to put the
new pipe in when the tank is out vs. dropping the whole tank again to
replace it later.

If you have already done your repair, and you are not experiencing a
fuel smell on fill up or leakage, I would not worry about it until you
start to have a problem.

I need to replace the fuel tank vent lines and such on my "new" Vanagon
- I noticed all the kits from the vendors include the cross-over plastic
tube/pipe is on top of the tank, as well as a new o-ring for the fuel
gage sender. I did not replace this pipe when I did this procedure on my
old van.  Is it really necesarry to replace this cross over pipe and the
o-ring for the fuel tank sender?  The plastic pipe adds $35+ dollers vs
just lines and seals. Just wondering what people's personal expereince
