Ben, As a Canadian living in the US I can clear up some of your confusion, since this was all new to me as well a few years ago. In the US, a title is something unrelated to the vehicle registration. A title signifies ownership of an object only. So things like cars, boats, houses etc. have a title here, declaring who the owner is. A clear title indicates there is only one owner, for example there is no loan outstanding (lien). When a car is bought or sold here the new owner must apply for a new title in his/her name, then deal with the vehicle registration, unlike Canada where only the registration must be dealt with. I believe in Canada the bill of sale effectively constitutes the title. Angus
