It's been about 15 years since I had the pleasure of dropping a tank, but if I recall, the most annoying feature of this set-up is that the tube goes *above* the shift linkage. Correct me if I'm wrong. This means that it can not be inserted into the grommets until the tank is raised nearly to its final position. Hence lots of skinned knuckles and cursing of VW genius engineers. The post that I seem to recall indicated that by using a longer flexible hose this awkward situation could literally be circumvented. :-)
