Saying "bolts vs. studs and nuts" is just a shorthand way of saying "non-seperable rotor and hub (bolts) vs. separate hub and rotor (studs n' nuts). Putting (say) Audi discs on a Syncro is relatively easy: pull the old rotor off the studded hub, put the audi rotor on, and find a machinist to make the caliper fit. On the 2WD the axle hub and front rotors are all one piece. If you take the rotor off, you've got no hub! One of the key parts for the South African brake kit was a hub with studs for each of the 2WD axles.
