Good info Jim. The Bosch Oil Filters that I buy from Bow Wow in Surrey, BC
are the black ones that say 'Made in Germany' on them.

Mann 719/12 = Mahle OC 108 = 070 115 561 = Vanagon 1.9/2.1 VW specifically
calls for this filter for the Vanagon and nothin' else.
The valve is there, it's just not visible on the Mann unit because of a
difference in design (I thought the same thing until I hacksawed one apart.
The Mahle unit is a different design where the valve can be plainly seen. My
personal preference is for the Mahle, but the Mann is fine. YMMV
Mann 719/5 = Mahle OC 47 = 056 115 561 G = Most Watercooled Gas Inline 4
Volkswagens. These do not have Anti Drain-Back Valves that I know of. I have
used this filter on my Westy on one occasion a few years back (because I had
no choice at the time), but experienced no problems, such as oil pressure
loss. I only used it for about a thousand miles when I found more of the
correct filters elsewhere (I was out on the road).
I do not endorse the use of Bosch oil filters for the 1.9/2.1 Vanagon as
most of the time these are a re-badged Fram unit. There has been extensive
discussion on this list on the pitfalls of running Fram oil filters in that
there is a drop in oil pressure, etc. Check the archives for more info.
