Once, Wild Bill could no longer stand my old man's abuse of a fine automobile so he took it upon himself to change the oil in an Olds 98 which probably hadn't seen an oil change in 30 Kmi. or, in other words, since it was driven off the showroom floor. He mixed a 50/50 solution of kerosene and motor oil, filled the crankcase and let the Olds idle. After a few minutes, the Olds started to puff billows of smoke and I got scared because I thought my ass was grass since I was part and parcel to this debacle. Wild Bill told me to cool my tool and that everything was as it should be. After about twenty minutes the smoking stopped, the hydraulic valves quieted and the Olds purred. When it was drained, the once fresh oil/kerosene mix poured out of the oil pan looking like India ink. George |
