I don't think I ever caught whether you had an air cooled or water cooled version of the 83. I have very little experience with the WBXers but as a general rule I've found that you can often have several things working as a combination against you. Just as an example : on my Air Cooled I had wrong point settings, frayed wire on my resistor pack and frayed wire on one of the injector grounds. That was enough to cripple it. I found that if I followed the first rule of Vanagons: #1) Use all Bosch Ignition parts, replace everything that is prone to wear. Spark plugs, spark wires, distributor cap, rotor, point set. Clean the top of your spark coil and check for frayed wires. #2) Replace all Fuel Injection Hoses with quality FI hose, replace the Fuel Injector small seals and the big rubber retainer rings. #3) Test the fuel pressure at the passenger side fuel rail for 25-45 PSI. #4) Install hose clamps on every vacuum line in the engine compartment except those that are obviously tight like the line to the distributor vacuum can. #5) Check the main ground wire at the front transmission mount and check all other ground wires (brown) that you can find. The ground wires for the Fuel Injection system are white. #6) Clean all electrical connections in the engine bay (do not remove the harness from the control head unless you disconnect the battery). It is possible to flood injected engines and a Vanagon engine is no exception. #7) Check the Cold Start Injector for electric supply and for fuel flow. #8) A bad cylinder head temperature sensor can also cause a no start and fuel starvation after it starts. After I had endured problems for a while I just opened my wallet and they enough money at it to get all the new parts I listed above. #9) The timing needs to be Dead-On, both at the idle position and at the full advance position.

> This is starting to border on the absurd- now the van won't start at all! Got ready to pull out this morning, and it rolls over, doesn't fire. I called FAST in Santa Fe, he told me NOT to order a gas tank yet, have AAA bring me there, I can camp in their parking lot, he will look at it Monday, get me back on the road. So I guess I'll be spending part of the weekend in Santa Fe, a good place to be.
