I'd say it's likely an intermittent electrical connection somewhere. Since the tach zeroes and the engine stumbles, I'd start at the hall sender and work my way back to the ECU from there. Bentley has procedures for checking that stuff. Check grounds too, while you're at it. I'd be more specific, but I don't know what engine you have (other than it's probably not a 1.6diesel, as you say you drive it on the freeway).
