Hi Chris,

I was talking to my Dad about this today, and he mentioned a trick
from the old days I thought worthy of passing along:  If you got
stuck out in the back woods without chains you can use rope in their
place. Thread the rope through the holes in the rim going around the
tire. It's a tedious process to install and requires about 100' of
rope per wheel, but if it's all you have it'll certainly help get you
going.
