What are the common problems seen with the vanagon auto tranny? I have one with 150k miles on it, and it works fine. However, it sounds a bit "loose" - by which i mean that it sounds like there is some play somewhere in the drive train. My van (before the engine died) had a poor idle, and it sounded like the erratic idle would cause something to repeatedly clunk a bit as it took up and released slack. Once you start driving, it shifts fine. Another time you hear the play in the drivetrain is when decelerating at around 1500rpm (where the fuel cutoff happens) the van would repeatedly surge, each time with a clunk. Can the AT develop "play"? If not, is there another likely point for this to develop? Should I just replace the AT if I get a new engine as a preventitive measure? |
