check the seals on the tops of the expansion tanks in the wheel wells. these are the two plastic tanks that may be hidden behind the undercoating if you had a van with it. the seals go to the vapor valves on the top hidden out of site. that was the source of my tank contamination. one was totally rotted out and gone except for scraps laying inside the expansion tank. the other was hanging on by unknown support. road dust gets kicked up there and the first moisture kicked up later washes it down into the tank. you may or may not also get fuel odors from the tanks.

as to the second question, a tank from an 82 had no visible screening or anything on the pickup tube. a tank that i got off of an 83 doesnt appear to either. but i am going to cut the 83 tank open to examine it to see what i really being used for the pickup. very curious and the tank needs repairs anyway.
