Subject: Fuel Filter and Gas Tank

I brought this thread up recently. I had my tank out at the shop (87 2WD) to repair a leak and they said I couldn't use a liner kit because the tank had a screen in it. Apparantly unlike my old type I where the screen is a replacable part, it's part of the tank in the vanagon. Have you actually used the kit and how did you deal with the screen? I have not had the opportunity to inspect the tank myself, so I'm going on what the shop said. I did notice that the canister filter is downstream from the fuel pump. This configuration seems strange to me. Seems like you would want some sort of filter between the tank and the pump to protect the pump. Has anyone tried putting one of those small in-line filters between the tank and pump? I was thinking this set up might allow you to remove the tank screen so you can use a liner without clogging the works. Order yourself a POR-15 gas tank kit http://por15store.com/ and use this site to do the tank http://www.ratwell.com/technical/FuelTankRestoration.html and have a nice day doing it, it takes about three to four days to do it right. Phil
