I think the intermittent aspect of this problem makes it especially tricky to diagnose. Try not to overlook wiring that is peripherally connected to the hall sender also. I had the same symptoms a few years ago and traced it to the tachometer circuit. Disconnecting the tachometer wire at the coil made the problem go away. One of these days I'll get around to pinpointing the fault so I can have my tach back.
