Did you also open the lower rear half of the space down to the metal plane of the engine cover? I've noticed wasted area down there too, altho removing the hatch needs a bit of that space.

Peter, I did not open that up. I use that space under the rear closet for oil, oil filter, brake fluid, etc. storage. There is another space though above the rear closet that I have opened up. The small cubby hole to the far left has a wood backing, the extension of the divider in the closet. This small piece can be removed with a small fine toothed hand saw like a drywall saw but the teeth are fine, to give access to the entire top of the rear closet. Lots of storage space up there.
